Crypto futures PnL and ROE calculator

Find out what a long or short actually makes: the profit or loss in USDT after fees, the ROE on your margin and the price move behind it. Enter the position as a quantity of coins or as its value in USDT.

Estimates for linear USDT-margined contracts and spot. Exchanges round quantities to their lot step and charge funding on perpetuals, so real numbers can differ slightly. Not financial advice.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose long or short and enter the entry and exit prices.
  2. Enter the position size — in coins (the quantity your exchange shows) or as the position value in USDT. The value is quantity × entry price, not the margin.
  3. Set the leverage you used and, to see the net result, your taker fee per side (for example 0.05%).
  4. Read the net PnL, ROE, fees and initial margin. Change the exit price to see the result at your target or at your stop.

How PnL and ROE are calculated

On a linear USDT-margined contract the profit is the price difference times the quantity; for a short the sign flips. The fee is charged on the position value at entry and again at exit. ROE compares the net result with the margin you put up, which is why the same trade shows a bigger ROE at higher leverage.

  • Gross PnL = (Exit − Entry) × Quantity (× −1 for a short)
  • Fees = (Entry × Quantity + Exit × Quantity) × Fee % ÷ 100
  • Net PnL = Gross PnL − Fees
  • Initial margin = Entry × Quantity ÷ Leverage
  • ROE % = Net PnL ÷ Initial margin × 100
  • Price change % = (Exit − Entry) ÷ Entry × 100 (× −1 for a short)

Worked example

A long of 0.05 BTC at 100,000 with 10× leverage, closed at 102,000; the taker fee is 0.05% per side.

Gross PnL = (102,000 − 100,000) × 0.05 = 100 USDT. Fees = (5,000 + 5,100) × 0.05% = 5.05 USDT, so the net PnL is 94.95 USDT. The initial margin is 5,000 ÷ 10 = 500 USDT, which makes the ROE 94.95 ÷ 500 = 18.99% on a 2% price move.

A short: 5,000 USDT of ETH shorted at 2,500 is 2 ETH. Closed at 2,400 with 20× leverage and the same fee, it makes 200 USDT gross, pays 4.90 USDT in fees and nets 195.10 USDT. The margin is 250 USDT and the ROE 78.04% — on a 4% move.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between PnL and ROE?

PnL is the result in money (USDT). ROE, return on equity, is the same result as a percentage of the initial margin. With leverage the margin is smaller than the position, so ROE is roughly the price change times the leverage: a 2% move at 10× is about 20% before fees.

Why is my PnL negative when the price moved my way?

Because of fees: you pay them twice, on entry and on exit. With 0.05% per side, a long of 0.05 BTC from 100,000 to 100,050 earns 2.50 USDT gross but pays 5.00 USDT in fees — −2.50 USDT net. To break even the price has to move roughly twice the fee rate, about 0.1% here.

Are funding fees included?

No. Funding on perpetual contracts depends on how long the position stays open and on the rate at each funding time, so add it separately. Your exchange shows the funding you paid or received in its transaction history.

Why is there no liquidation price?

It depends on the exchange's maintenance-margin tiers, the margin mode (isolated or cross) and the rest of your balance, so this calculator leaves it out. The liquidation price calculator gives an estimate for isolated margin; the exact number is in your exchange's order form.
